While, we don’t get the snow, ice, or blizzards often associated with winter, the many winter holidays and the fact that it is in the middle of the school year tempt people to hold off their move. Here are some reasons a winter move is a good choice and some tips on making your winter move as safe and smooth as possible:

There are likely many more enjoyable ways you’d rather spend enjoying the winter rather than moving. However, a winter move does have benefits. These include:

  • Professional movers are more available. Trying to find movers or storage during the summer is frustrating. You won’t have that problem moving in winter. With a lower demand, professional moving companies will have more inventory of moving supplies and trucks. This will save you a lot time and stress.   • Less competition. The summer months are a popular time to move, and there is a lot of competition when buying a home.   • Double wrap glass items, electronics, and other fragile items that can crack from sudden temperature changes and extreme cold. Consider packing electronics last in your car to keep them protected.
  •  Lay down plastic sheets on the floor to protect them from mud and water that get tracked in from loading and unloading.
  • As it gets dark earlier in the winter, timing your loading and unloading is more important. Time your loading and unloading early before it gets dark. If you must load in the dark, make sure your exterior lights are on. It is also a good idea for you to have a few pairs of headlamps available for moving items after dark.
  • Keep the electricity, gas, and water on until moving day. Turn on the utilities of your new residence the day before you arrive.
