Winter is here and many people like to stay inside by the fireplace when it’s cold outside. This means that a move during the middle of the winter and being outside in the cold can seem like a nightmare. Here are some things you can do to make a winter move a little easier on everyone involved.
Since it gets dark so much earlier in the winter, you might be lacking in daylight hours during your move. Take advantage of the daytime hours and get started with packing early in the day so that you can call it a night fairly early before it gets too dark. Finishings early will help you stay safer since you won’t have to worry about taking loads outside when it’s slippery and dark. Plus, the temperatures are sure to be more comfortable during the daytime hours as well.
While you’re packing and transporting things from your home to the moving truck, think about wearing layers of clothes. You’ll need to remain warm, yet you most likely won’t have any desire to wear a big, bulky coat when you have a lot of work to do. Dressing in layers will enable you to remain warm without being as cumbersome. Also, you can remove a layer or two in the event that you get hot while you’re moving.
Don’t forget to have your essential utilities switched on and running in your new home. Take care of this fundamental task at least 10 days before you’re scheduled to move in just to be on the safe side. After all, wintertime is not the best time to go without electricity, heating or water even for one single day.
Be sure to pack a box of winter essentials for your move. Include items such as a warm change of clothes, toiletries, snacks and easy to prepare meals. Have this box loaded last and unloaded first so that you will have access to these items as soon as you arrive.
Keep hot chocolate on hand! There’s nothing better than a warm beverage during the winter and hot chocolate does the trick every time.
