What Fireman Movers DFW Thinks You Shouldn’t Pack For Your Move

Preparing for a move is very time consuming, but it’s worth taking some time to consider what items are appropriate to pack and which you should arrange to handle differently. Movers in Ft. Worth typically have a list of “non allowables” available on request. Moving companies either aren’t legally allowed to move these items or have good reason for not doing so.

Safety first

Most “non allowables” are on the list due to safety considerations. Some household items are obviously hazardous, and can potentially cause damage to your other items on the moving truck or worse. These include things like fertilizer, pesticides, cleaning solvents, and pool chemicals. Some are less obvious, for example batteries, nail polish remover, scuba tanks and matches. In most cases, moving companies are allowed to move weapons but not ammo, so make sure any guns or rifles you plan to move aren’t loaded.

Don’t pack living things

Avoid boxing plants or, especially, pets. Plants need light and air to survive. Some won’t even survive a short move if crated. If you have any questions about how to move your plants, you can contact the Texas division of the National Plant Board (https://nationalplantboard.org/texas/ )/ Never plan to put your pets on a moving truck. Besides the fact that household movers in Ft. Worth and elsewhere are typically prohibited from transporting animals, it’s dangerous for their physical and mental health. If you have multiple pets that require moving, google “professional pet movers” to find companies that are equipped to do so.

Don’t pack perishable items

While canned foods are safe to move, perishable foods can spoil during the move or attract pests. If you have food you’re unable to finish eating before you move, consider giving it to friends or family or donating it to a food bank.

Keep valuable items and heirlooms with you

It’s a good idea to keep a close eye on items that are especially valuable to you whether their value is monetary, legal, or sentimental. Family heirlooms like scrapbook or photos; expensive items like jewelry and electronics; and important legal papers are all examples of things that you should pack and move on your own. Even if a mover is allowed to transport valuables, liability insurance frequently won’t cover them at their full value, and there’s no replacing great-grandma’s ring regardless of financial compensation.
