Moving Your Stuff to Storage? Here Are Some Helpful Tips

If you have items you’re planning on storing over long periods, you’ll want to make sure they stay in good condition. One option is to hire a Ft. Worth TX mover to pack for you. Otherwise, here are preparations you can take to ensure your belongings remain damage free.

Your goal is not only to protect your items, but to make sure you use your storage as efficiently as possible and ensure easy access. Here are some helpful tips:

  1. Inventory all your items before packing and list which box contains which items. Group objects by category or room. Label each box clearly with markers on the side of the box so you can see the labeling after they’re stacked.
  2. Clean everything before packing.
  3. Use boxes of similar sizes. Having a wide variety of box sizes makes it harder to maximize your use of space.
  4. Pack everything possible into boxes to allow for easier moves and provide protection from dust and the elements. Seal all boxes with packing tape.
  5. Always pack heavier items at the bottom to prevent damage to lighter things.
  6. Wrap fragile items individually with packing paper and bubble wrap.
  7. When possible, disassemble furniture and electronics. Wrap and store the separate parts from each item together.
  8. It’s a good idea to keep especially valuable items like jewelry, rare antiques, heirlooms, important documents, and fine art in safe deposit boxes instead of regular storage units.
  9. Consider renting climate-controlled storage. Your items will stay in better condition over time in an environment without extremes in temperature and with lower humidity.
  10. When you load everything into the storage unit, pack taller and heavier items first. Arrange boxes and other items leaving pathways for ease of access.

Steps to prepare different types of items for storage:

Storing furniture

  1. Remove everything in drawers for separate storage.
  2. Vacuum upholstery to remove possible contaminants or pests that can destroy it over time.
  3. Disassemble furniture when possible and group the removed parts from each piece in the same plastic bag.
  4. Cover furniture with towels or white sheets. Never use colored sheets, which can bleed into upholstery. Covering furniture with plastic sheets will ruin varnish and trap mold and mildew
  5. Clean mattresses and wrap them in sheets or mattress covers. Store them flat rather than on the side, which results in unequal weight distribution and damage. Don’t place heavy items or boxes on top of mattresses.

Storing electronics

  1. Remove dust from electronics before you pack them. For more information about how to do this, there are various sites online explaining proper procedures.
  2. If you know how, remove all cards from desktop computers and store them in static-free bubble wrap. This will help prevent corrosion and other damage.
  3. Box electronics in their original packing boxes if you still have them. These are custom-made to fit each piece.
  4. Store flat-screen TVs and monitors upright.

Storing clothes

  1. Clean all clothing beforehand.
  2. Hang clothes in garment bags rather than folding and boxing them. This will reduce the likelihood of mold growth, wrinkling, and disfigurement.
  3. Use mothballs or other insect repellants to prevent damage from pests.

Storing books

  1. Wrap leather books in paper; otherwise, they can stick to each other and cause damage.
  2. Use smaller boxes. Packing a lot of books in heavy boxes makes them difficult to move.
  3. Pack them flat. Storing larger book upright can cause spine damage.
