Tips on Tipping Movers

Tipping movers isn’t a requirement, just like tipping waiters or any other service worker, but it’s a considerate thing to do if they’ve done a good job. After all, moving is perhaps the most physically demanding job there is. Being polite and looking after your belongings during a move while working hard is worthy of acknowledgement. Movers don’t expect a tip, although they’ll certainly appreciate it.

So How Much Should I Tip?

It depends. The typical amount is around $5 per hour per worker depending on the movers’ attitude and performance. Unlike for waiters, for example, tipping 15 or 20% of the total bill doesn’t make sense – your tip might wind up being unreasonably large. Movers in the DFW area are usually paid by the hour. If your movers take too many breaks or seem to drag their feet, they’ll deserve a smaller tip. (Remember that moving requires a lot of energy, so it’s natural for movers to slow down and take occasional breaks during the day.) If they do their work efficiently and politely, tip them more. Difficult jobs warrant a bigger tip, for example, moves involving carrying heavy furniture up stairs or large numbers of boxes packed with books or records. Also consider the degree of care your off duty firemen movers take with your belongings. Did they take care to protect your walls and furniture during the move? Factor that in. Did they go out of their way to be helpful, for example, offering to disassemble furniture that would be difficult to move through tight spaces? Take that into account. If your crew was polite and professional, they deserve the extra compensation. Keep in mind that accidents happen, and a single mistake shouldn’t negate an otherwise well-done job.

How Else Can I Show My Appreciation?

While off duty firemen movers always appreciate cash, there are additional ways you can express your consideration. Offer lunch like pizza or sandwiches during a long move. Keep bottles of water or Gatorade in a cooler by the door. Your movers will work more efficiently if they’re properly hydrated.

When Should I Tip?

Some people will give movers in the DFW area some cash before the move to encourage good performance. This isn’t expected or required but sometimes has the desired effect. In general, tip your movers after the move is complete, including unpacking if that’s part of your arranged service, and you’re satisfied that all of your things are accounted for and in good shape

When you’re ready to give out tips, it’s best to give them to each person rather than to the foreman. That way, you can express your thanks to every worker individually and make sure they get their fair share. Make sure to have $10 or $20 bills on hand to pass out.

Finally, if you’re satisfied with their job, leave the moving company a positive online review to let others know they’re worth hiring.
