When  you are moving, there are many things on your mind. As a result, some items are often forgotten when packing for any move. You may wonder if everything you own will even fit in the designated moving vehicle, if the location of your next home will fit all the items you have accumulated, or if your new home will meet all your needs. Tax documents, bank statements, health records and prescriptions, contracts with vendors and providers, birth certificates, passports, social security cards, and insurance policies are just a few items you should always keep on hand.

If you are able, scan the documents and store them electronically: If the items you're looking to keep track of are primarily paper-based, scanning is an affordable and efficient way to digitize all those papers. Most scanners can scan directly into your computer or online storage like Dropbox or Google Drive.

For hard-copy documents like birth certificates, passports, and social security cards, we recommend storing them in a special binder so they can be in one place.

If you've taken the time to digitally store your tax documents, financial or banking statements, and other forms of personal information electronically, we recommend shredding them to avoid identity theft. It's best to do this when you're finished using them for the year, but many of us forget. If you're moving soon, it's an excellent time to get rid of old paperwork you'll no longer need.

Miscellaneous Items That Are Commonly Forgotten When Moving

While packing, don't forget common electronic accessories such as a computer or phone cords, chargers, and cables. Also, you may not want to forget your holiday decorations, hidden emergency cash and change, yard equipment, outside plants, mirrors behind doors!

Remember to plan how you will dig up and relocate your cherished cactus if you've had it since infancy. The same goes for ornamental hanging orchids and other movable foliage in the yard or around the house. These relocations necessities require planning in advance.

Lastly, it might be a good idea to take a photo of the cords setup before you put away any equipment. When settling into your new home, the picture will save you a lot of time and stress in setting it up in your new location.

The best way to ensure you don't forget anything important is to create a detailed checklist of every item you plan to pack. This checklist can include everything, from your toothbrush to that box of pictures you keep in the closet. While this won't apply to everyone, one way to make the packing process less tedious is by keeping everything labeled, as this reduces the chances of you or movers accidentally throwing out something irreplacable.

Do a Final Walk Through

The idea behind the final walk-through is to ensure you haven't left anything behind. You don't have to get down on your hands and knees and check every floor crack or crevice in the walls, but you should at least go through the entire house and check each room for anything you might have missed.
