The Do’s And Don’ts When Moving In Together

Do's and don'ts when moving in together

Moving in with your significant other can be a major life transition, which comes with positive and negative emotions. Before you get too invested in moving in together, it is important to know the dos and don'ts of living with your significant other.

Do: Try To Get Both Names On The Lease.

Everyone's situation is different, and maybe it isn't practical for you and your significant other to purchase a home just yet. However, discussing the pros and cons of renting or purchasing is still important before moving in together. If you and your partner are engaged, married, or planning for a baby, it can be a good time to discuss a financial plan that will allow you to plan ahead for those milestones together.

Even if renting is the plan for now. It is important to ensure everyone in the home is on the lease. This way, both parties will be held responsible, and no one will be excluded from the responsibilities of the lease's terms and agreements.

Don't: Hide Any Financial Issues From Your Partner.

To have a trusting relationship and household, you can't hide money problems from your partner. As the old saying goes, "What you don't know can't hurt you." which may be true. However, it's always best to be transparent early on to avoid future harm or distrust when moving in together.

This is important for couples who decide to split everything 50/50. If the intention is to split everything down the middle, you would want to avoid unintentionally placing burdens on your partner. Therefore if you are transparent in advance, no burdens are misplaced when deciding financial responsibilities and budgets. The goal is to work together to put up savings and avoid debt.

Do: Create Your Household Budget.

First, plan how much you will contribute toward your rent or mortgage payments, utilities, groceries, home expenses, and discretionary purchases. Then mutually agree upon this when creating the household budget for shared expenses, such as groceries, household essentials, and more.

Separate any personal expenses for which you are each independently responsible. This can be challenging when there is an income disparity between partners or if one is more of a spender than a saver. However, the budget will always prioritize all bills and home-related items.

Don't: Forget To Establish Your Financial Boundaries.

Discuss your financial beliefs, relationship with money, comfort levels, and financial needs and expectations early on. Whether splitting bills or utilizing a joint account, establish financial boundaries that allow you and your partner to consult before making large purchases. This will benefit both of your financial health down the line.

I wanted to reach out and thank you and your crew for the help and work they did in my move. Your guys were professional and very positive throughout the whole move. They really put me at ease and what I thought would be very frustrating day was a good experience. They were very careful and treated my stuff with great care. When they arrived I felt we were maybe not as packed and organized as we should have been but they helped get it together and packed on the truck. I was so glad it went so smooth. Please thank the crew and please use us as a reference as we are a happy customer. My daughter had used you and we were glad she gave us your number.
