Planning a move is an exciting and stressful time. Preparing your possessions for that move can lean more toward the stressful, especially when it comes to large appliances. These items are expensive, potentially fragile, and not easily replaceable – so much can go wrong!
Here are a few tips for properly preparing your large appliances for your move – without all the stress:
Your first step before moving your appliances is to disconnect them from any utility they may be connected to. Unplug the electricity. Disconnect the water supply. These may seem like common sense steps, but many homeowners overlook them.
Next, you’ll need to empty your dishwasher, fridge, oven, and any other appliances that may regularly hold items. Remove food items from your fridge and freezer. Empty your dishwasher. Take any pans out of your oven that you may store in the main cabinet or the drawer beneath. This will prevent damage to items and appliances.
Once items are removed, clean your appliance. Be sure to contact your manufacturer or read your manual to be sure you are doing so correctly. Some ovens have a self-cleaning feature. Some dishwashers do, too. Check to see how your appliance should be cleaned and follow those instructions.
Some large appliances have parts that will move and shift during transit, which may damage the appliance. It is important to remove or secure all small, moving parts so that this doesn’t happen. This includes removing trays, shelves, racks, hoses, and any other part of your large appliance that cannot be easily secured. Lids and drawers should be taped or corded closed to ensure that they don’t rattle or slam during the move and damage the appliance.
