Fur-ever Home: How to Move with Your Pets Stress-Free

The process of moving comes with a lot of stress. You're dealing not only with the physical act of moving your belongings but also navigating your way through a new home, neighborhood, and city. This can be incredibly challenging for your pets as it involves adjusting to a new place without really comprehending what's going on.

So, how do you make your little furry friends (or scaled family) feel at home amidst all the change?

1. Pay a Last Visit to Your Veterinarian

If you're moving far away, it's advisable to check in with your current vet. Ask them for a recommendation of a new vet near your destination in case you need one during or shortly after the move. Additionally, if your pet requires vaccinations, it'd be an excellent opportunity to get them up to date on their shots. Remember to ask your vet for a copy of your pet's medical records, any health concerns they may have, tips to reduce stress during the moving, and any other relevant paperwork.

2. Purchase or Make an Identification Tag

No matter how good your pet is at staying close to home, there's always a chance they could wander off in all the commotion of moving day. As a result, it's always wise to get them an identification tag with your contact information and address. Ensure their collar fits well so they won't be disconnected during the move. By doing so, in case they wander off, it will be easier to reunite with your pet.

3. Allow Enough Time for Preparation

It's normal for us to assume that a particular task will take fewer hours than it actually will. Then, once it comes time to complete the job, we run up against a ton of unexpected snags and obstacles! Therefore, giving yourself and your pet adequate time to prepare for the big day is quite essential. One way to involve your pet in the preparation process is by letting them explore and play around with the boxes as you pack up. That will make them less anxious and more comfortable in the process.

4. Pack a Pet Survival Kit

The last thing you want is for your pet to be a nervous wreck come moving day. Pack a "pet survival kit" for your furry friend to prevent this. This could include items like their favorite toys, treats, food and water dishes, a blanket, their leash, any medications they may be taking, and anything else they'll need during the move. Doing that will help ensure all your pet's essentials are with them.

5. Avoid Changing their Routine Drastically

One of the best things you can do to make your pet feel more at home is to keep up with their daily routine. Changes in routine might be a threat to their sense of security and could cause more stress. As such, you should keep up with their regular eating, walking, play times, and even baths as closely as possible. Letting them gradually get used to the new area will make them respond much better.

6. Take It Slow

Familiarity breeds comfort and security for your pet. Therefore, avoid taking your pet to a new home right away. Instead, give them time to acclimate to the new environment. Start with shorter visits, then slowly increase their time there until they're comfortable enough to stay longer. This approach will help your pet transition smoothly and make them feel less overwhelmed in their new home.

Above all else, show your pet lots of love and affection during the process. The more attention you give them, the easier it'll be for them to adjust.
