How to Cope with Homesickness After Moving

A change of scenery can be exciting, rewarding, fulfilling, and open you up to a new world of opportunity. Unfortunately, immense changes like moving can also be quite overwhelming and present you with a new world of scary unknowns. It is not just the physical structure of the new house but your friends, family and all the familiarity of the sites that can make you feel isolated and alone. Sadness or anxiety after moving, or maybe even a longing to move back, are not unique to your position and you are far from alone. If you’re a recent college graduate, you definitely aren’t alone.

Regardless of your age, lifestyle, and marital status, homesickness can affect us mentally and physically. Each person is also unique in the amount of time it takes to adapt to the new environment.

Some of the signs of homesickness include:

  • A sense of insecurity and loss of confidence
  • Feeling sad, lonely, helpless
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fatigue, lethargy or lack of motivation
  • Panic attacks
  • Wanting to go back home
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lack of concentration at work/studies
  • Disturbances in sleep
  • Headaches, stomach aches and nausea

If you are struggling with homesickness, then what should you do to ease that sick feeling in your stomach? Read on to gain a better understanding of three steps you can take to alleviate homesickness after a move.

1. Make Yourself Feel At Home

Take your time to become acclimated to your new environment. Get to know your neighbors, and your neighborhood, and really get to know all the exciting goings-on around your community. You can try to foster a new social support circle through:

  • Parties
  • Local meetups
  • Community events
  • Community-based social networks

Another good way to make yourself feel at home is by adding personal touches to your home to make it feel like more of a home. Be thoughtful about your landscaping, decorating, interior design, even choices of furniture. Some of these things might seem trivial, but every little factor can lend a hand in helping you feel more at ease.

2. Embrace The New, But Don’t Disregard The Old

Even though you are starting a new life somewhere else, that doesn’t mean you have to end the traditions, habits, and relationships that brought you happiness in your old life. Keep in touch with your old friends, neighbors, or family members who brought you support and comfort at your old home; in the Internet Age, maintaining that contact is easier than ever.

You should also continue to keep up with the old habits and routines that brought you comfort. For example, if you like to exercise, consider looking into local gyms around the area. If you like to just go on casual walks, look for scenic routes around your town. Phone apps like NextDoor and Meetup offer several ways of connecting with your neighbors or others with similar interests.

If you have hobbies, creative, or artistic outlets you enjoy, maintain those outlets as best as you can. Likewise, if you have any favorite foods, coffees, teas, or other drinks, keep on enjoying them (in reasonable moderation). As you embrace the new and unfamiliar, hold on to your old, familiar traditions to help yourself stay grounded.

3. Take Care Of Yourself

Moving is stressful and overwhelming enough as is; the last thing you want on your plate are more stressors to compound that stress. Some of that stress is bound to be a given, but you should do everything within your power to offload those extra stressors. Among other things, consider:

  • Hiring movers to assist with the relocation
  • Journaling, to identify specific thought patterns
  • Practicing other self-care habits
  • Seeking professional mental health support if you believe it’s necessary

All of the above can help you recenter, readjust, and reacclimate to your new home. If you’re relocating to the Dallas-Fort Worth or greater Tarrant County area, consider referring to reliable, family operated moving-assistance services like Fireman Movers DFW.

I wanted to reach out and thank you and your crew for the help and work they did in my move. Your guys were professional and very positive throughout the whole move. They really put me at ease and what I thought would be very frustrating day was a good experience. They were very careful and treated my stuff with great care. When they arrived I felt we were maybe not as packed and organized as we should have been but they helped get it together and packed on the truck. I was so glad it went so smooth. Please thank the crew and please use us as a reference as we are a happy customer. My daughter had used you and we were glad she gave us your number.
