First, we at DFW Fireman Movers want to make it clear that tipping is not required; but as with most services tipping is a way for the customer to express their thanks for a job well done. The only rule when it comes to tipping your movers is that there’s absolutely no pressure to. Keep in mind that you hired them for a reason: moving is hard work and takes a lot of heavy lifting that you’d rather not do yourself. Tipping is a simple way to say thanks for a job well done.
Most movers don’t expect a tip, but when one is given, it’s greatly appreciated. You may feel like you’re already paying the moving company a small fortune and a tip is excessive, but few people in the service industry work as hard as movers do. While there is no “average tip”, it is widely accepted that tipping amounts for movers range from 5% to 10% of the total bill to a flat $20 per man. The proper etiquette is to tip each mover individually and not to the foreman or supervisor.
The bottom line is the tip you provide should reflect the level of service and degree of difficulty involved. Think about the size of the move, the number of over-sized pieces and whether stairs are involved. Depending on these complicating factors, consider adding to the amount.
Are water, Gatorade, beer, and pizza tips? For your friends, definitely (and highly encouraged). For the pros: not a great idea. Offering food or drinks is a kind gesture, but it’s not recommended as a way to get around tipping.
