Avoid Property Damage: How to Protect Your Home During a Move

Moving out is stressful enough without having to worry about property damage to your house or apartment on your way out. There are ways to minimize the risk of losing your security deposit or problems with the new owners of your old home.

Professional home movers in DFW have the materials and expertise to protect your soon-to-be former living space, but even so, careless packing can still cause problems. Taking appropriate steps will help prevent possible damage whether you plan to hire professionals or move out on your own.

Pack properly

Large boxes packed with heavy items can potentially break open while they’re being moved and can damage to floors and other surfaces. Make sure to use large boxes for light items only and pack heavy items in smaller boxes.

Use protective coverings

There are a variety of options available to protect carpets, floors, walls and furniture. Break down corrugated cardboard and tape the pieces together to cover floors on moving paths. Plywood sheets will protect tile or hardwood flooring, which can easily be damaged by accidentally dropped heavy appliances. Use carpet film to prevent damage to carpets and rugs. Corner guards are widely available at home improvement stores and can help prevent chipped edges. Securing large bed sheets, comforters, or bedspreads to walls with tape is a good idea, especially in narrow hallways. Using coverings like furniture blankets, bubble wrap or mattress covers on furniture and mattresses will provide additional protection. Carefully wrap any pieces protruding from furniture. Secure your coverings for safety

You or movers can trip over bunched-up coverings, so make sure they’re laid flat and secured with tape or some other adhesive. This is especially important on stairways.

Use moving aids

Moving aids like dollies and hand carts will help you move safely and efficiently. Moving pads can be used to slide furniture across floors without damaging them.

Take measurements

It’s a good idea to make sure that the large items you plan to move can fit through doors or hallways. In some cases, it might be necessary to disassemble furniture if possible.
