At DFW Fireman Movers we often are asked about the length of a move in apartments and in high-rises and how this relates to the cost of the move. We make our clients aware that moving to or from an apartment, condo, or high-rise, the cost of that move can potentially be higher. This is not because we charge any kind of special fee or surcharge for these residences. It simply takes more hours to complete the work.
So why does it usually cost more to move if you live in an apartment or high-rise? It is fairly standard practice for movers to charge per crew member per hour. Therefore, the longer a move takes, the more the total move is going to cost. Using stairs, elevators, or restricted areas or loading bays require additional time. In general, elevators are the slowest element of a move because they require more time and energy to load and unload then move to the truck.
Generally, apartments and high-rises are more expensive to move, but there are some ways to ensure the move goes as quickly, smoothly, and cheaply as possible.
Some high rise buildings have policies require that you contact the owners first before moving in. Failure to do so can lead to heavy fines that might inconvenience you and further complicate the whole process. Therefore, you have to call the owners of the building to reserve some things like elevators and docks. In some cases, you are required to make parking reservations beforehand. Ensure you evaluate the parking capacity of the place and determine whether it will contain the moving company truck.
Especially in apartments or high-rises, the parking lots and loading bays can become very crowded on the weekends. This results in movers having to park far away or waiting around for extended periods of time for a slot to open. This will significantly slow your move down and end up costing you a lot of unnecessary money. If possible move midweek for a far less crowded and quicker move.
If you’re moving to an apartment or condo from a home it’s likely not all of your belongings will fit in your new space. Before you begin packing, go through each room and see if there are any belongings you could sell, donate, or put in storage. Pro tip: If you haven’t used something in the past year, it’s time to let go. For seasonal items, think about putting them in storage. This will not only save space but will shorten your move, saving you money in the long run.
